ROCHE – RARE DISEASE

Create animation storyboards and supporting materials to highlight the issues faced in rare disease medicine development. Target an audience of the public, healthcare professionals and stakeholders alike.

THE IDEA

The journey in developing rare disease medicines is a long, complex and winding one, with multiple pathways and sometimes dead ends. An analogy of mazes is used to convey such complexity, with its horticultural context being played and expanded upon to produce visual metaphors. I developed an illustrative style that is easy to animate, and achieves a ‘hand-crafted’, unique feel that resonates with rarity.

In the UK, it is estimated that…

…3.5 million people will be affected by a rare disease at some point in their lives.

This represents…

…1 in 17 people.

A single medicine can involve 7 million hours of development…

…upto 400 researchers…

…and…

…22 billion euros of funding.

The rare disease landscape…

…is rapidly progressing…

…with scientific research…

…providing valuable molecular insights…

…into how diseases develop…

…and act upon the body.

Translating a scientific breakthrough…

…into a medicine…

…represents one part of the journey.

The next step is to ensure a medicine reaches patients.

A medicine must receive a licence before distribution.

Each medicine is assessed by multiple different regulators…

…before completing the process…

…and making its way into the hands of patients.
